There is seemingly a different type of cake, not just for each region, but for every month too! Currently we’re in the Carnival month, so the cake is a very light sponge sandwich with a florentine version of Chantilly, sprinkled with icing sugar and the obligatory ‘fleur de lis’ sprinkled in cocoa
Last month, it was ‘epiphany’ cake – Which I thought I was familiar with from my time in France; where they have a crowned frangipani cake, and whoever, gets the ‘bean’ is made king. However, this is not what we saw here, instead it’s apparently a sort of gingerbread donkey covered in hundreds and thousands… and smarties (very authentic? perhaps just a savvy way of using up all the soon-to-be out-of-date stocking fillers)

I guess our next cake will be the Colomba for easter…
